The
Holden Monaro GTS is produced by General Motors Holden in Australia,
G.M.H. being the equivalent of General Motors in the USA. The car
model was raced in 1970 and 1971 in the Australian Touring Car Championships
running against Trans-Am Mustangs and Camaros. The driver known
to most Australians as 'Storming Norm Beechy' took the 1970 touring
car championship.
The
model started life as a friction toy, lending itself to a reproduction
of this now famous car by having a clean 1/25 scale body. The hood
was cut out and the guards flared to take the very wide Mini-Litres
and racing rubber. The body was then painted in Humbrol yellow and
the various authentic stripes and names added.
The
basic chassis was used and the friction motor cut out. A replica
of the 490 H.P. 350 CI Chevy engine was put in place. The engine
has brake lines and fuel lines. The suspension, wheels and motor
had to be made up of assorted kits - mostly AMT.
Bob
has been modelling for about five years and has often admired the
cars that appeared in our model of the month contest. He expressed
a desire to see an Australian entrant win once - so here it is!
